Hydride powder refers to a composite powder of hydrogen and metal or other elements. Methyl hydride is a binary compound formed by hydrogen and other elements. However, in general scientific and technological work, the binary compound of hydrogen and metal is always called hydride, and the binary compound of hydrogen and non-metal is called hydrogen.
 
Ionic hydrides can be directly synthesized from metal and hydrogen under different conditions. The reaction temperature is 300-700°C. In order to avoid the hydride generated on the surface of the metal to prevent further reactions, a dispersoid of the metal in mineral oil is commonly used, or a surfactant is added.
 
In addition to being used as a reducing agent, it is also used as a desiccant, dehydrating agent, and hydrogen generator. 1kg of lithium hydride reacts with water under standard conditions to produce 2.8m3 of hydrogen. In non-aqueous solvents and +Ⅲ oxidation state B(Ⅲ), Al(Ⅲ), etc., it can generate composite hydrides widely used in organic synthesis and inorganic synthesis, such as lithium aluminum hydride:
 
4LiH+AlCl3→LiAlH4+3LiCl
